Algeria poised to become world's second largest crude steel producer

While the pandemic somewhat foiled Algeria's global expansion in 2020, the country has started this year with overseas steel export shipments. Some rebar tonnages have been exported in January. Producers do not plan to stop on these achievements.

Tosyali Algerie, the country's key steelmaker, opened the year of 2021 with a rebar shipment to Europe. Some 12,000 t was recently shipped to the UK.

According to market insiders, this year will become a year of export for Algeria with Tosyali Algerie and Algerian Qatari Steel being the key suppliers. "Tosyali Algerie is planning to double its export quantities to North America, the Caribbean region, as well as West and Central Africa."

Algeria delivered sizeable tonnages of steel products to foreign customers in 2020, but less than planned initially due to the pandemic challenges. Rebar takes the lion share in trade. North America, Europe, and Africa became the main sales destinations.
